(Two months ago. Yes, I should have finished this a while ago.) No longer can anyone say that non-binaries using they\/them pronouns are grammatically incorrect! Instead, a (digital) dictionary can be thrown at their ignorant head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps with more awareness of this modern use of they\/them by non-binaries, we can be more mindful of excluding such persons by saying \u201che or she\u201d? Truly, that would be fantastic. After all, singular \u2018they\u2019 has<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.oed.com\/blog\/a-brief-history-of-singular-they\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> been in use for at least 700 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and notable users include Jane Austen and William Shakespeare. And it\u2019s not the first case of a plural pronoun becoming singular. Way back in 1660 George Fox, the founder of Quakerism, wrote an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">entire<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">book<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> labeling anyone who used singular \u2018you\u2019 a fool. He believed that only the traditional \u2018thou\u2019, \u2018thee\u2019, and \u2018thy\u2019 should be used. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nobody<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> talks like that today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here\u2019s a shout out to all the teachers who\u2019ve already eliminated \u201cs\/he\u201d and replaced \u201che or she\u201d from their handouts, permission slips, and anywhere else it might show up.
