He was one of the most accomplished singers in the world, winning 13 Grammys and making the Guinness Book of World Records 39 times. He was an icon in the history of music, and people fainted and had to go to the emergency room just at the sight of him. He was one of the best singers in the world. People called him the “King of Pop.” But even though he had six billion fans and money that could last generations, Michael was suffering from many things. In this article, you will learn about his life, his family, and much more!

Childhood

I wouldn’t exactly say that this singer had a “Childhood,” and you’ll learn about that as you read more in this section.

Michael Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana on August 29, 1958. In fact, he didn’t start singing until the age of 5. Until then, Michael went to school at Garnett Elementary School, and he lived life as a normal kid in the 1950s, while his brothers were constantly going on tour with the family pop band, the Jackson 5. Michael had wanted to perform with them, but sadly, his parents, Katherine and Joseph Jackson said he was too young to perform. But then, when Michael was 5 years old, his mom heard him singing while he was doing the laundry. “Wow,” said Katherine Jackson,”you have a beautiful voice.” And with that, Michael joined the Jackson 5, not knowing that his singing career would last 45 years. His father, a retired boxer who worked as a manager for the Jackson 5, was very strict. He didn’t even give breaks to the young singers, even on holidays like Christmas or Thanksgiving! He also accused Mike of having a “big nose” and being “too black.” This made Michael really sad; he developed major insecurities later on in life about his face and body. Joseph Jackson also whipped Michael with a belt whenever he sang a bad note. His brothers also made fun of Mike, also saying he had a big nose. By then, little Michael developed an unhealthy habit of keeping his feelings and thoughts to himself.

In 1966, the Jackson 5 (Michael, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Jackie Jackson) won their first talent show at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana. That was followed by the Jackson 5 gaining popularity from the crowd, and they soon went touring in Japan, Johannesburg, Australia, and even more countries! They even performed at the Apollo Theater in New York, which was famous for including many rising black artists and helping them be included in the world of music since 1914. But, the child singer never got enough sleep because they were always traveling to new places to perform. Mike said he really enjoyed sleeping with his brothers in crammed hotel rooms when they were on tour, though. But, with all that hard work, the Jackson 5 became a music sensation! Some hits you might know are “I want you back” and “ABC.” The brothers may seem like they had the best life ever, with all the fans and fame. But such fame doesn’t come easily. Michael and his brothers had to miss birthdays and holidays like Christmas and Halloween just to practice. By 1975, Michael renamed the Jackson 5 “The Jacksons” because he thought the old name was too childish and he was starting to grow up. And, by 1979, Michael Jackson made an epic hit, called “Rock with you.” He made his first solo album at this time, and then he released three more solo albums with Motown Records, and then he found out that being a solo artist was his thing. But Michael was growing up, and he wasn’t the kid that the audience was used to anymore. He claimed that as a teenager he had a lot of acne. He also shared a personal story from when his brothers went touring. They had just landed at the airport, and a huge crowd swarmed around them. A woman yelled out: “Where’s Michael? Where’s Michael?” And his brother stepped out of the way and said, “There he is,” And the woman made a face at him and said, “Ew..” and walked away. That moment scarred Michael for life, since he had an almost photographic memory.

Michael and his brothers in the Jackson 5, where Mike is in the middle.

Can you find Michael in this album of the Jacksons?

Answer: He is in the bottom left.

Solo

  Michael Jackson in 1984.

Michael Jackson – Billie Jean (Motown 25) (Remastered 4K)
Click on this link to watch his full performance !

The 1970s and 1980s were some of the best and most memorable years for Michael. Some of his best hits happened then, but Michael also had a few accidents at this time. In 1979, Michael fell over and broke his nose. He saw this as the perfect opportunity to get a smaller nose, because his brothers were still after him saying that he had a “big nose.” And so, he got his first surgery to make his nose smaller, because of his poor body and face image. Michael also claimed that he hated his smile, but his smile is known to be the most beautiful smile in the world. Also, In 1984, Michael Jackson reached the peak of his career. He wrote the well-known album and song “Thriller” which reached number 1 on the best selling album of all time, and it still is number 1 today. (Try googling it). Also, in 1983, a year after Thriller was released, Michael Jackson performed what might be one of the greatest performances ever. On May 16, 1983, Michael Jackson first showed the world the moonwalk, which soon became his signature move, mostly on the song “Billie Jean.” He started dancing, which left fans with their mouths open the whole show. His iconic toe stand which showed his strength, balance, and bravery was also introduced to the crowd in this amazing show. He reached the peak of his fame, and in 1986, Michael Jackson was awarded a Guiness Book of World Records award for the largest deal a solo performer had ever signed with a corporation ($50 million with Pepsi). Another thing that happened in 1986 was that Mike was diagnosed with a skin condition called vitiligo, which is when patches of skin lose their color. It normally comes in little pigments and they get bigger as you get older until, in Michael’s case, he became entirely white. He was accused of bleaching his skin, but that was misinformation. He had a skin condition, and he said that many times, but still no one listened to him. He became extremely insecure about this, which added on to the mile-long list of Michael’s insecurities. But, in January 1984, two years before that, Michael Jackson’s scalp caught fire when he was filming a Pepsi commercial and the fire effects went off earlier than expected, so Michael’s hair was burnt. You can watch the video on youtube, but it is pretty sad. And the sad fact about this is Pepsi didn’t apologize to Michael. They just gave him a couple million dollars in a basket for his medical bills and left him to tackle his own problems. But Michael paid for the medical bills with his own money. He used the money that Pepsi gave him and donated it to a charity for sick children.

More photos from this chapter

Michael’s smile that he supposedly hates. Michael Jackson’s vitiligo.

Children

Michael Jackson loved children. He loved them so much that when he died, he was in debt of over 500 million dollars because he wanted to build a children’s hospital, he donated to charity and he bought food for poor Africans. He loved them so much because he didn’t have a childhood, he said. He spent all his time in fame and concerts. He didn’t have any time for playing with toys or going to playgrounds and all that. So, he tried to fit in some childhood at 30 and 40 years old. He bought a 2,700 acre house called Neverland Ranch, and he built an entire amusement park. He had a circus with acrobats, a train station, trampolines, pools and a farm with horses, elephants, giraffes, and some chimps! It was a wonderland for him and for children. He invited just about any child that wanted to come. I’m pretty sure he would take you, too if he was alive. One of his bestest friends that came pretty much all the time was Macauley Culkin, or Kevin from home alone. They were both famous, and they both understood each other. Michael also invited his cousins to hang out with him.

Michael in Neverland with children.Michael Jackson – Fun at Neverland
A video of him with Macauley Culkin!

Neverland was his personal sanctuary, he said in a 2003 interview. When you watch the video, you can see that Michael is having fun, laughing, and just having a great time.

The 1990’s to 2000s.

In the 1990s, Michael was still riding off his fame and success from “Thriller” and “BAD”. He had purchased Neverland, and he was going strong on his painkiller addiction. He had a habit from childhood that he couldn’t sleep. Also, a reason that Michael couldn’t sleep was because when he performed at his extreme concerts, he had raised adrenaline levels that only went away in 2 days. He had to take many strong drugs, such as propofol, which is a dangerous sleep drug that his doctor, Conrad Murray, said for him to take. This drug is said to kill him later. In July 1990, 45 children with life threatening illnesses were invited to Neverland. Michael invited them because he loved children, and he also wanted them to meet him if their medicine doesn’t make it. He wanted to invite all the children in the world to Neverland. Michael also released his 1991 album “Dangerous,” at this time. He was 32 years old in 1991. He had lots of misinformation about him, and people called him “Wacko Jacko”. This hurt him alot, because all he wanted to do was to heal the world and save the children. In 1995, Michael Jackson collapsed unexpectedly at a rehearsal because he was so dehydrated and hungry. Doctors claimed that he collapsed because he also had irregular heartbeats, inflammation of the intestines, and kidney and liver irregularities. He was rushed to the hospital and he was saved by skilled doctors. He was 15 minutes away from death. He then went to rehab, and worked on an album called “Blood on the dance floor”. This album personally scares me, because the song “Morphine” is about him taking demerol, a strong pain-killer in addition to Propofol, his sleep drug, and many more. In 1992, Michael wrote a song called “Heal the world.” It is about how he wants to make the world a better place. He started the “Heal the World foundation” which raised 100 million dollars for children’s charities and for poor children with no parents to make their lives better. He also released the hit “Earth song” which had a deep, hidden message to his fans. Watch the video and see what you think. Michael Jackson also went to rehab because of his addiction around this time, in which he wrote the song “Morphine,” and he made his album “Blood on the Dance floor.” When he got out of rehab, (which did not help) he performed his album shortly after.

Flashback : Michael Jackson collapses in NYC (1995)
A video of the news’ reaction to this event.

The Last 9 years

These last 9 years of Michael’s life he released his album “Invincible,” Which “wasn’t as good as his other albums” The news reporters say. Michael was 42 years old in 2000. People say that in December 2000, Michael looked really different. The public thinks that It is from his plastic surgeries that he got throughout his life. When he finished performing for his album “Invincible,” he “Retired” because he wasn’t in the mood or age for performing anymore. That decision wasn’t very great, because he had to give up his Neverland ranch, and they were constantly moving in hotels. His kids didn’t like this idea as much. Michael thought that moving places wouldn’t attract as much attention, but he was well known all over the world. But he was facing depression, sleep problems, anxiety, and financial problems. People call this era his “Mature era” because he wasn’t performing much at this time. He spent this time caring for his kids, and goofing off with his young friends. Mike was getting close to retiring, because he had spent his entire life on stage, and he was getting old, tired and weak. He didn’t have enough time or energy to perform like he used to. But, he still had one more show planned in mind. He was going to call it “This Is It,” because this really was it. This was going to be the biggest, greatest, and best selling show of all time. He started rehearsing shortly after. The show was going to include his greatest hits, the best technology, and light up accessories. You can watch his rehearsals on youtube.

But, Michael was nearing the end of his life. His body was weak and sedated every night with a shot in the arm. He was sore all over, and his body was telling him he needed a break. He fainted multiple times at rehearsals, and each time that happened he punished himself by not eating for another two days. He planned on doing 50 shows. But, sadly a month before he was going to perform this show, he died from overuse of dangerous and toxic drugs on June 25, 2009. Fans had already bought tickets to his show, and the entire world was crying over him. (I would too if I was alive then). Michael Jackson still remains one of the best artists of all time, and I believe no one can change that. No Taylor Swift can beat his ground-breaking performances. No other Michael Jackson will ever be made in this world. I hope that if you read this far, you understand that. I hope this article helped you understand Michael Jackson just a little better.

Thank you for reading my article!

THE END.

Author’s note

My name is Maria Kuklina, and I have always dreamed of having my work published out for people to read. My Michael Jackson obsession started in March, and it has been going strong ever since. I listen to his music every day, and I hope this article will hopefully inspire people to appreciate Michael Jackson and his awesome work. He saw the world as a world of music, love and care. He wanted to change it for the better, but he sadly died at the worst time for him. The allegations for child molestation were made up because news reporters wanted to make money off of him. Michael was truly an amazing artist then and forever. I don’t understand why people criticized him.
