Or Not?

Rachel Barker hops off the bus, into bustling, noisy Manhattan. There are people everywhere. A car speeds by her. She coughs, waving away the car exhaust. Eyes watering from the smoke, she’s takes out her camera. The shutter clicks, snapping a picture of the famous Empire State Building. Rachel heads inside the building, only to be disappointed to find a long line already ahead of her. She sighs.

Traveling has it’s pros and cons, as does everything. What are they? Keep reading to find out and decide for yourself what makes traveling really worth it, or not…

The Good

During traveling, you can learn many new things. Like the history of where you are visiting. You can also experience(/try) new things, like different foods. Sightseeing is awesome! You can take pictures at world famous landmarks. You can visit and explore them. You can make new friends and meet new people. And make wonderful memories.

Americans take around 2 billion personal trips for business and leisure every year. This shows that a lot of Americans travel. Why? Because they like to. Statistics also show that 3 out of 4 (75%) domestic trips are for leisure. This proves that people don’t just travel for work, but they travel for fun too.

Other data shows that 1 out of 8 U.S jobs depend on travel and tourism. Every time you travel, you’re helping to keep someone employed.

The Bad

Traveling can be very expensive. Statistics show that money spent on traveling for fun totaled $597 billion in 2012. That’s A LOT. Also, one of the greatest challenges an international visitor (or visiting an international country) faces is the annoying, long, tiresome visa process.

Language barriers are also a bad part of traveling. Learning a language is hard. And going to a country that has different main language is confusing when you don’t understand. Also traveling away means leaving your family and friends. Missing them is sad. Some people don’t want to leave their friends and family, so therefore, they don’t travel. Also for international traveling, jet lag (time differences) are definitely a con.

What do you think?

Of course, this is a personal opinion, so here are some quotes from our expert travelers. “I probably would go on vacation because I think it’s worth it,” local middle schooler Aidan Bonner says. “Packing is a hassle, but traveling is a fun experience all around. Also, I like to learn about culture and try new foods.”

“Yeah, I like to travel,” local middle schooler Aarushi Aggarwal comments. “I have been to many places. I love the sightseeing, but I definitely love learning about the diverse communities the most.”

Do you agree or disagree? Why? Think about the opinions of these local people, just like you, the next time you travel. So you can decide if traveling is really, really worth it.

By: Angela Chi

       Top 5 Fun Facts:

Top 5 leisure travel activities for U.S domestic travelers :

Visiting Relatives

Shopping

Visiting Friends

Fine Dining

Beaches

Top 5 leisure activities for overseas travelers:

Shopping

Dining

City Sightseeing

Visiting Historical Places

Amusement/Theme Parks

Top 5 places to travel to:

Paris

Barcelona

London

Maui

New York City

<colgroup>
<col width="733" /></colgroup>

Bibliography:

Online Sources:

#1:http://www.ustravel.org/sites/default/files/page/2009/11/US_Travel_Answer_Sheet_March_2013.pdf

#2:http://travel.usnews.com/Rankings/Worlds_Best_Vacations/

Is Traveling Worth It?
