October 7 is famous for basically pictures taken of the moon. To be more specific, in 1959 the Soviet Union’s Luna 3 spacecraft took photos of the far side of the moon. The reason this was celebrated was because astronomers always made people believe that the moon’s far side or other side looked the same as the front, this was far off from the real answer. The Luna 3 spacecraft proved that the far side was completely different. It had less flat plains, crater marks, and it was more rough and damaged. Another reason that this was a victory was because these pictures were some of the only high resolution or high quality photos sent from the moon from a long distance.
Sadly, after completing its mission, the spacecraft lost touch with earth on October 22nd. People still believe that it must have burned up in earth’s atmosphere in the following year.
