The Scary Sleepover by Evelyn Cho

Everything changed at that moment. I was at school and then the bell rang. That wasn’t the scary thing though. It all changed when a girl invited me over for a sleepover. It doesn’t sound scary, but it will when I tell you this: her family is vampires! I didn’t believe it at first, but when I tell you my story you will believe me…

They aren’t vampires! I told myself over and over again. Everyone says that our next door neighbors are vampires but I don’t believe it. I tried to investigate them to prove that they weren’t vampires.

First I will spy on them from my bedroom window, I thought. So I went to my bed and looked out the window and saw the kids playing. Nothing suspicious. I looked out the window again but instead of the kids I saw bats!

The kids are vampires and turned into bats! I thought. No, I shouldn’t jump to conclusions.

But the next day at school I noticed something strange. I decided to talk to the vampire that was my age and ask them some questions. I might even discover the vampire’s name.

“Hi, what are you doing?” I asked her.

“Do I know you?” she asked

“Well now you do. Want to be friends?”

“I guess”

Then she left me and I didn’t see her again that day. Strange. She is a vampire!  Why did I keep thinking that they were vampires! They are not vampires!

The vampire stopped, turned around, and then walked toward me.

“Fine. I’ll be friends with you,” she told me.

Once she said that then I wished that I never asked her to be my friend. Would if she invited me over to her house!

Now I was confused if she was a vampire or not. What if she is? What if she’s not? What if she is?

STOP! I told myself. She is not a vampire!

A few days later I looked out the window and I saw a cute little brown bunny with a white tail. Everything was normal. Until I saw the bunny step onto the vampire’s yard with little flowers. The bunny instantly dropped to the ground with a thud.

The flowers are poisonous! I thought

The next day the vampire girl came up to me to talk to me right after the bell rang.

“Do you want to come over for a sleepover?” she asked.

I didn’t want to say no, but I didn’t want to say yes.

“Why not? I told her.

Then I got ready for the sleepover in the haunted house with vampires. What have I done!?! I don’t want to go!

And that’s why I had a new plan. I tried faking being sick. It was going to be perfect since it was the weekend and I didn’t need to miss any school. There was no way I was going to that sleepover!

I looked out the window. There was a tree that I didn’t see before. It bended down as it screamed and took a bunny that was trying to cross our neighbors lawn, and threw it across the sky.

The wind must have done that.I told myself, but I could sleep for the rest of the night.

Later that night my plans to fake being sick fail and now I have to go to the sleepover! I walked over to the house and took a look at it.

The house was black and had plants growing all over it. The lawn looked like it wasn’t mowed for years. The house’s glare was so hot that it could have turned anything into lava.

I take a deep breath and walk over to the house.

BANG!

I crashed into a stone in the middle of the yard. I took a closer look and I saw letters that are so old that they could have been from one thousand years ago.

Is their yard a graveyard!?! It looked like it but I didn’t want to believe it. I went around it and walked to the house and knocked on the door.

“Come in,” said a voice so empty and cold that it ran shivers down my back.

I opened the door and stepped into the house covered in cobwebs, spiders lurking in the corners.

I was trembling while hoping that the sleepover would be canceled.

And here I am now. It turns out that they have pet bats and hate taking care of the house. I actually bumped into a rock when I was trying to get to their house. The bunny that went on the flowers fell asleep, and the bunny that got thrown by the tree was actually just a dream. But that’s not the strangest thing that happened. After all of that I still don’t know any of their names!
