Summer by Ms. Mills

Summer. Just the word evokes images of pools, beaches, books, vacations, sun, and the great outdoors. Everyone looks forward to summer for different reasons. Some are ready to sleep in, while others are ready to watch YouTube videos or stream their favorite shows. Whatever your plan, summer is a break from the routine and rigor of the school year. It’s a time to rejuvenate and catch up with friends and family; I know I love spending more time with my daughters and my dog.

For me, summer is a chance to try new activities and visit new places. The places don’t have to be far, just different. I love trying a new restaurant or going for a hike in a new place. We are lucky in Massachusetts to be surrounded by so many interesting museums and historical sites; a day in Salem, MA is pretty fun!

What’s wonderful about summer in Massachusetts is how many activities we can do outside with little or no cost. Have you ever seen the Boston Pops perform on the Esplanade for the 4th of July? Or gone for a bike ride on the Nashua River bike trail? There are free movie nights in many towns, all you need is a lawn chair and some bug spray!

I won’t lie, even though I am happy about summer, every year, I miss my students and colleagues. They are the reason I got up every morning for 180 days. Eighth graders are off to the high school for new adventures, but they have left their mark and will be missed. I love teaching, from the classroom to our amazing field trips. It is my greatest wish that we all take a minute to be grateful for our educational opportunities and the wonderful community that is Wayland Middle School.

So whatever your summer plan, enjoy yourself. Try something different. Do something you love to do. Spend time with the people you care about. That’s what summer is all about! And when summer comes to a close, let’s be ready to reconnect again. Happy summer!
