As of September, 2025, Roblox issued a mandatory update in which all players must either take an AI powered face scan, or must show Roblox their ID, in order to verify their age, and after that, you would only be able with players of your age group and you would not be able to play any games rated above your age group, so that. Sounds good on paper, right? Well, the problem is this: the AI has been getting people’s facial scans completely wrong, putting them in inappropriate age groups and making them inable to communicate with their friends or family. On top of that, it was confirmed that Roblox was not fully getting rid of the faces, and that caused a lot of backlash in the Roblox community, and many players have started quitting now that they can’t communicate with their friends in-game. Investors have also quit investing in Roblox, because they fear that they will lose money. Also, this has been moving child groomers and predators to other, unsafe platforms like Discord, where safety guidelines are more light and unsafe for kids.

The people responsible for this are the CEO, David Baszucki, and the CSO, Matt Kaufman. They are the ones issuing these updates, and the community is very unhappy. Content creators, like Kreekcraft, Thinknoodles, and Flamingo, whose careers are based on Roblox gameplay and commentary, have made videos addressing the changes, and how they have left the star program, a program for content creators which would give them in-game currency to boost their channel, for protest against the updates. On top of that, the player count has significantly decreased ever since the facial recognition update, as parents didn’t want their children giving Roblox access to facial features and other personal information, such as birthdays and real names.
As of April, 2026, David Baszucki, announced that Roblox will be making changes to how age groups are structured in Roblox, and that he will be separating the game into 3 categories: Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and Roblox.
- Roblox Kids is for people who haven’t age – verified yet using either of the two options above, or people who were verified as kids under the age of 8. Roblox kids locks chat for all users, and locks games that have a maturity level above “Mild”.
- Roblox Select is for people who have age – verified as 9 – 15 years old will be placed in Roblox Select, where chat is disabled by default but can be turned on. All games above the maturity level “Moderate” will be locked.
- Regular Roblox is where all people age – verified as over 16 years old will be placed in Regular Roblox. All users will have chat enabled, and all games will be available to play.

Finally, Roblox got rid of their Premium subscription. Roblox Premium is a subscription that gives you more features in Roblox, however, they are going to get rid of it, and replace it with Roblox Plus. Only if you have a Roblox Plus subscription, you can create games on Roblox. Before, making games on Roblox was free for all – anyone and everyone could make one without needing to use any money, now you need money to make games on Roblox. This is a huge problem, because most kids don’t have the sufficient money to buy the subscription, and most kids’ parents would not enjoy spending money on games. So basically, making games is limited to adults only, unless somehow a kid convinces their parents to buy it for them.
All in all, Roblox is in a REALLY bad spot. They are losing investors, losing players, and making horrible decisions with the company, turning what was once a free, fun, retro – style game for all ages turned into an app where you have to spend real money in order to get basic amenities, and people are segregated by age. There is also a lot of drama following a certain Roblox game, Pressure, with SA allegations, but that’s for another article.
