College Lacrosse Week Zero by Nate Cooper

College Lacrosse Week 0

College lacrosse starts this weekend! Spring is on the way! There are 2 games this weekend that will kick off the 2021 season. Utah at Denver and Bellarmine at Mercer. First up we have Bellarmine at Mercer at 11:00 am. Then we’ll have Utah at Denver at 3:00pm.

Unfortunately, I don’t think it will be broadcasted. This will be a great matchup, even though these aren’t top 20 teams. These are two evenly matched teams that will make for a great game on Saturday. One spotlight will be Chad Surman’s first game as the Head Coach of Mercer. Look for Sean Goldsmith to quarterback the Mercer offense. And Jon Robbins, who led the team in caused turnovers in 2020. While Landon Trout will look to get things going on the offense for Bellarmine this season, junior face off man J.T. Simonton looks to start the season on a good note for Bellarmine.

Then to end the first weekend of college lacrosse, we have Denver vs. Utah. This game will be broadcasted on Denver lacrosse’s website https://denverpioneers.com/watch/?Live=411&type=Live. Obviously, the spotlight is on Jackson Morrill’s and Lucas Cotler’s debut in a Denver uniform. Unfortunately, the other Yale transfer and best face off man in college lacrosse, TD Irelan, will not suit up this weekend because he is not yet enrolled in Denver after just transferring this week. Instead, Denver will stick to sophomore Alec Stathakis. Jackson Morrill will look to quarterback Denver’s offense alongside Ethan Walker, the fifth year senior. Then coming out of the box will be Jack Hannah and former Yale captain, Lucas Cotler, will look to get things started from up top too. Meanwhile, Utah is in a different boat than Denver. Losing their top scorers Jimmy Perkins due to a transfer and Colin Burke deciding to forgo the extra year of eligibility will definitely give the Utah offense a different look. Look for Mac Costin, Josh Stout, and James Sexton to step up and lead the offense. Cole Brams will look to build on his .523 face off percent from 2020. Goalie Liam Donnelly will try to stay a brick wall in the cage.

Look forward to following both of these games and the kickoff of college lacrosse.
