Cookies by Anya Bayazitov

December is officially here and the holidays are just around the corner, which means that your favorite holiday treats are finally in season- and we all know what you’re thinking of:

Cookies!

Ok, maybe that’s not what you were thinking of, but I do know your mind automatically went to chocolate chip cookies when I said that, and yes chocolate chip cookies will always be superior, but let’s discuss the other most popular flavors, because I bet you won’t be able to guess what they are…

First up is… drum roll please… CHOCOLATE CHIP! Oops, already said that! Ok, so maybe you could guess the first one, but how about the next one? If you do, I owe you a cookie!
In second place we have PEANUT BUTTER COOKIES! Yum! These are great and easy to make, however maybe not a peanut-alergen’s favorite. But don’t worry, it doesn’t have to go to waste, I can take that for you!

Coming in third is OATMEAL RAISIN! This one might be a shocker for they are known to some as a “grandma cookie”, but I promise you they are much better than you could imagine, especially right out of the oven! I’m not a fan of oatmeal… or raisins… But I certainly do love cookies!

Snagging 4th place is PEANUT BUTTER BLOSSOMS! The name might not be familiar to some, but I bet you have seen them before! It is a soft peanut butter cookie with a Hershey Kiss placed right in the middle. You could also make them with regular sugar cookies, but then would they just be called blossoms?

The original, sweet, buttery, and always delicious SUGAR COOKIES are 5th. No need to explain this one to you, I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. There are many variations of sugar cookies though – there are pumpkin sugar cookies for fall, lemon sugar cookies for summer, and of course the either-love-it-or-hate-it frosted cookies from Stop & Shop. These also can make great holiday cookies because you can shape them into snowflakes and snowmen, and decorate them easily with frosting.

In 6th is my personal favorite, NO BAKE COOKIES! These cookies are not only delicious, but easy to make, because they require very few ingredients, and just like the name implies, you don’t even have to bake them! How is that possible? Well, I guess it just takes a little Christmas magic… or a saucepan. I highly recommend trying these, even if you don’t bake them (you can find good ones at Marshalls!). They are the softest and chewiest cookies you will ever find, and you will definitely want more!

7th place is claimed by MOLASSES COOKIES! These sugary cookies are traditionally small, but it is made up for by their taste. They have a crunchy outer layer, usually dusted in powdered sugar, and a sweet, soft and chewy inside. I’m sure you can guess the taste… hint hint, name… yes, molasses! Wow, how did you know!

The 8th most popular cookie is… MACAROONS! Wait, Macaroons? That must be a typo, it should say Macarons, right? Nope! They are two totally different cookies- Macarons are the french cookies that resemble mini whoopie pies, and Macaroons are coconut mounds, usually with a bottom layer of chocolate. They don’t have a typical cookie shape, they look more like a mini mountain of coconut, but hey, if it’s sweet I’ll take it!

Up next in 9th place are LEMON COOKIES! They might typically be a summer desert, but you can easily enjoy them any season- with their light coating of powdered sugar, and soft, delicate inside, who could resist? No, I’m not drooling… you are!

And finally, last but definitely not least, coming in tenth place are COOKIE CAKES! These are giant cookies that are topped with traditional cake toppings like frosting and sprinkles to resemble a cake. It is usually a big chocolate chip cookie, but could be any cookie you’d like!

Wow, after reading all of that, I hope this article didn’t make you too hungry! I recommend finding recipes for some of these cookies- you honestly can’t go wrong with any of them- and trying them for yourself! They must be in the top ten for a reason, right? Well, it’s your chance to find out! Happy holidays!
