I, Too, Can Fly

By Anonymous

A Tribute to Langston Hughes and Jason Reynolds.

I, too,

Have wings.

I am young.

And foolish.

And ignorant.

But I still have

That urge

That spark

That fire

To fly.

I have that whisper inside

That encourages me

Advises me

Insists that

I take the leap

Out of the nest

Into the sky

No matter what.

They say I don’t have wings.

They say I don’t deserve wings.

They say I shouldn’t have or deserve wings.

So I can’t fly.

I don’t believe them.

They say I’m too young.

Too weak.

Too foolish.

Too headstrong.

Too ignorant and innocent,

Too oblivious to the ways of the world,

To fly.

I still don’t believe them.

They say I don’t know.

I don’t know where I’m going.

I don’t know what’s out there.

I don’t know if I even have wings.

I can’t fly

That’s true.

But I’ll still take that leap.

Because that urge is inside me.

Within me.

That spark.

That fire.

That voice.

That voice called courage.

The road is dark.

The road is hard.

But I will spread my wings,

And continue,

Because I believe,

That I have wings.

I believe,

That I can be more.

I believe,

That I can take that leap into the unknown,

Knowing that I can make it

If I listen to this voice called courage.

I know,

That I, too,

Can Fly.
